The multi-sectioned water sprinkler system (2) and an early warning fire detector (3) are arranged in sections along the entire stretch of the tunnel (1). Spray heads (7) fitted at regular intervals with spray nozzles are spread out along the sprinkler pipes (2) and are set up at a certain angle so that the water curtain is comprised of turbulent impulse type flows which are formed into multi inter-engaging hollow cone type fine water sprays. The spray pipes are arranged in the ceiling and side regions of the tunnel. The sections of the sprinkler system are preferably formed into 25 m lengths with spaces of approximately 50m between the individual sections. Independent claim describes method for localising fire whereby the distance of the fire outbreak from the smoke detection site of the sprinkler system is determined from the response time of the smoke detection and the existing smoke speed.
