Device for illuminating an object, especially for microscopy use, has a light source (1) and a microstructural element (2), such as a glass fiber, which acts to spectrally broaden light passing through it. Means (3) are also provided for targeted influencing of the phase or amplitude behavior of individual spectral components of the light coupled into the microstructural element so that broadband light passing through the element can be adjusted as over a wide range. The invention also relates to a corresponding method.
