A sample (1) is excited by a monochromatic light at a frequency ? to produce a Raman spectrum in frequency and intensity for the sample. The Raman spectrum of a reference body (10) of different composition is produced by the same apparatus and the measurement is made by comparing the two spectra : The spectrum of the reference body is measured simultaneously or sequentially as that of the sample. An independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the above process, comprising a source of excitation (6), a measuring head (4), a spectrometer (8), a treatment unit, means (3) of directing a beam from the source to the sample and means of directing a beam from the source to the reference body. The treatment unit compares the two spectra. The light beam passes through the reference body between the source and the sample. Alternatively, a semi-transparent layer or movable mirror is placed between the measuring head and the sample to send part of the beam or the beam for a brief moment to the reference body. A reference source ensures calibration.
