PURPOSE: A system and a method for controlling a sleep mode in a broadband wireless access communication system are provided to control a sleep mode of a subscriber terminal by using a table constructed for managing sleep information of subscriber terminals. CONSTITUTION: A base station(200a) groups subscriber terminals, which have requested for a sleep operation, to each group for sleep mode controlling(S305). The base station(200a) sets a TRF-IND message transmission time of each group(S310). When an SLP-REQ message for transition to a sleep mode is received from a subscriber terminal(100)(S315), the base station(200a) generates and updates a sleep interval scheduling table of each group including subscriber terminals(S320). The base station(200a) transmits an SLP-RES message with respect to the SLP-REQ message to the subscriber terminal(100)(S325). The subscriber terminal(100) is transited to a sleep mode at a sleep mode start time included in the SLP-RSP message(S330). When a sleep interval included in the SLP-RSP message elapses, the subscriber terminal(100) is transited to an awake mode(S335). Meanwhile, the base station(200a) recognizes subscriber terminals waking up at the set TRE-IND message transmission time(S340), adds a BCID of subscriber terminals with packet data to be transmitted to the TRF-IND message(S345) and transmits it at the TRF-IND message transmission time(S350). The subscriber terminal(100) receives the TRF-IND message and checks whether the TRF-IND message is a positive traffic message or a negative traffic message(S355). If the TRF-IND message is a positive traffic message, the subscriber terminal(100) is transited to an active mode(S360).
