The method involves sending information related to a state of each tower crane by an automaton of each crane to other cranes. The crane is set out of use by a crane operator. The automaton of the crane allows the effective setting of a wind vane of the crane only when the information sent by the automaton of each of the other cranes indicates that no crane jib sweeps an area swept by a jib of the out of use crane. An independent claim is also included for a device for setting a wind vane.
