A filter apparatus and method for recovering carbon nano materials such as fullerenes produced in a gas phase reactor are provided. The filter device is provided for in situ cleaning of the filter to allow the collection of filters collected from the filter to be recovered. The product can be released and removed from the reactor without interrupting continuous synthesis of the carbon nanomaterial. The filter device promotes the reactor operation and the larger production of carbon nanomaterials. The filter is cleaned by adding driving force and / or air flow. In a specific embodiment, the filter is cleaned by a reverse flow pulse to the filter. The present invention also provides a reaction apparatus for vapor phase synthesis of continuously continuous carbon nano materials using a filter apparatus according to the present invention. Preferred reaction devices synthesize carbon nanomaterials by combustion. A method of continuous fabrication of carbon nanomaterials using a filter apparatus and method of the present invention is also provided.
