For a controlled spontaneous ignition at an internal combustion motor, under a low load, the fuel/air mixture is injected (50) into the cylinder and given a high compression while the inlet valves (37,38) are closed. The compression is relaxed followed by a further compression phase and the fuel/air mixture is ignited spontaneously.
