The unit has an actuator, and a signal generator (104) generating a sequence of tones. A control unit (102) contains programmable memories (122, 124) for storing digitally coded signal sequences, a user interface, a decoder and a micro controller. The control unit is connected with an interface for wireless receiving digital data of a portable radio terminal or personal digital assistance (PDA). The interface is designed as a Bluetooth module (126) and an infrared interface (128). An independent claim is also included for a method for supplying signal sequences into a programmable memory of a control unit of a bell unit.
