The method involves demodulating a received phase-modulated and amplitude-modulated optical DPSK binary signal, and evaluating the phase and amplitude data of the demodulated optical DPSK binary signal. The received optical DPSK binary signal is received with reduced amplitude and changed phase. Photodiodes (FD1-FD3) are used for the amplitude demodulation of the optical DPSK binary signal. An independent claim is included for a receiver for optical DPSK binary signals.
