An in-building station includes a home station (10) and a door station (12). Communication is initialized by establishing a connection over a data exchange network (30) based on the kind of signals that may be exchanged and the configuration of the communication device (36) e.g. mobile telephone, personal digital assistant (PDA), computer with data card. Signal exchange is thus enabled over the data exchange network or over a mobile radio network (34).
