Engine speed, oil pressure and oil temperature are selected as measured variables to be cross-linked. A three- dimensional characteristic diagram (TDCD) represents the variables so that each point in the TDCD belongs unambiguously to a specific oil quality/class. Differences in this ideal TDCD beyond a prescribable tolerance are displayed and indicated.
