The method involves focusing a laser beam (2) infinitely in front of a lens (8), and measuring the smallest diameter of the laser beam focused with the lens in focal point (9) of the lens. The diameter of the laser beam focused infinitely is measured. The divergence angle of the diameter of the laser beam and a focal length of the lens are determined, where the focal length of the lens is greater than 250 millimeter. An independent claim is also included for a device for characterizing a laser beam.
