An ultrasonic volume imaging catheter has one or more one dimensional transducer arrays (110) acquiring image data (120) in a given plane and motion controller actuator (140) and guide (130) moving the array on a straight line at right angles to the image plane to cover a three dimensional volume by using multiple positions to acquire several image planes. Independent claims are included for imaging procedures using the catheter.
