The method involves determining the time period characteristic for the duration of an excitation pulse from the temporal process of the measured time-dependent acceleration signal. The characteristic value for the vibration is determined in consideration of time span characteristic for the duration of the excitation pulse. An independent claim is also included for a device for the quantitative interpretation of vibrations in a motor vehicle.
