The method involves coding a current image to provide a coded current image. The current image at an intended quality level is reconstructed by using the coded image and a reference image for the intended quality level to provide a reconstructed current image of the intended quality level. The reference image of the current image is obtained at an initial quality level to provide a prediction image. A differential texture refinement is determined depending on the prediction image and the reconstructed current image of intended quality level, and the refinement is coded. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for scalable coding of moving images using a reference image for an image to code (2) a telecommunications system comprising a set of terminal devices connected via a telecommunications network (3) a computer program containing instructions for enabling the implementation of a method for scalable coding of moving images (4) an information storage unit read by a computer or a microprocessor storing instructions of a computer program for permitting the implementation of a method for scalable coding of moving images.
