PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating film for optical compensation for which a complicated step is not needed and by which control of the retardation to each wavelength of light is made easy. PSOLUTION: The coating film 1 for optical compensation is formed by applying a solution or a melted product of a liquid crystalline polymer on a substrate 10 while aligning the solution or the melted product in a direction parallel to the surface of the substrate 10. The surface of the coating film 1 for optical compensation has a projecting and recessed shape wherein recessed parts 2 and projecting parts 3 are repeated and when retardation values to light having 548 nm wavelength in the projecting part 3 are defined as r (nm)and retardation value to the light having 548 nm wavelength in the recessed part 2 are defined as r' (nm), respectively, r-r'10 is satisfied.
