PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-turn encoder capable of realizing fast position control by reducing the communication time of position data from the multi-turn encoder to the controller and to provide a controller and a multi-turn encoder output signal transmission system. ;SOLUTION: This encoder is provided with a light emitting element 3, a light receiving element 4 which is arranged correspondingly to the light emitting element through a fixed slit plate and a rotating slit plate and outputs an output signal when it receives light, an inter-one rotation data waveform shaping circuit 5 generates inter-one rotation data as a pulse signal from an output signal of the light receiving element and outputs it, a rotation count data preparation circuit 6 which prepares and outputs rotation count data on the basis of the inter-one rotation data from the inter-one rotation data waveform shaping circuit, and a signal switching circuit 18 which holds and outputs the rotation count data from the rotation count data preparation circuit when power supply input is initialized or after prescribed time passes since a request command, holds and outputs the inter-one rotation data from the inter-one rotation data waveform shaping circuit after prescribed time since then, performs switching so as to perform serial transmission and subsequently outputs the inter-one rotation data from the inter-one rotation data waveform shaping circuit all the time.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
