The method involves cultivating biomass plants (3) on a cultivating surface in rows, and driving vertically a harvesting machine in soil in a root area of the plants. The harvesting machine is pulled longitudinally lateral to the plant roots along entire cultivation in such a manner that only a lateral part of the root or root stock is separated from the soil and is conveyed by a digging and catching unit upwards. The plants are accommodated on a harvesting machine during harvesting process. The root stocks are harvested. An independent claim is also included for a harvesting machine for executing a method for combined harvesting of aboveground and underground plant parts.
