The method involves predetermining a set of reference values of an idle speed of an internal-combustion engine (13). The idle speed is regulated independent of desired values. A maximum moment (Mmax) and momentary moment (M) of the engine are determined and the reference values of the idle speed are predetermined based on the maximum and momentary moments of the engine. The reference values are predetermined in dependent of a difference (d) between the maximum moment and the momentary moment. The reference values are increased when the difference is smaller than a threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a control or regulating device for an internal-combustion engine for a motor vehicle.
