The method comprises introducing a partial supply of sulfuric acid-containing opencast mine water from the water into a first basin (11a) closed against the outer oxygen-containing air atmosphere, and supplying nutrients and reagents to the introduced water of the partial supply in the first basin for the growth of iron and sulfate-reducing bacteria. A second basin (11b) closed against the outer oxygen-containing air atmosphere is filled with water from the opencast mine water after filling the first basin. The basins are separated against the air atmosphere with foils (12a, 12b). The method comprises introducing a partial supply of sulfuric acid-containing opencast mine water from the water into a first basin (11a) closed against the outer oxygen-containing air atmosphere, and supplying nutrients and reagents to the introduced water of the partial supply in the first basin for the growth of iron and sulfate-reducing bacteria. A second basin (11b) closed against the outer oxygen-containing air atmosphere is filled with water from the opencast mine water after filling the first basin. The basins are separated against the air atmosphere with foils (12a, 12b). The basins are filled in a cascaded manner. The water from the first basin is introduced into the second basin under the exclusion of the outer oxygen-containing air atmosphere. The sulfate-reduced water seeps away from the basin. The seeped water flows back into the opencast mine water over a subsurface. The foils of the basins are moved due to the water level in the basin. The nutrients and/or reagents for iron and sulfate-reducing bacteria and/or reagents for fixing the reaction product of the sulfate-reduction in the water to be treated are added to the water supply to be treated from the surface mining water. The rain water is collected on the foils of the basins. The collected rain water is added to the sulfuric acid-containing water of the surface mining water. The water taken off from the opencast mine water is introduced as the partial supply into the basins formed on a waste dump. The water-partial supply is taken off from an enclosure arranged in the surface mining water. The nutrients and/or reagents are added to the water in the enclosure. The sulfate-reduced, anaerobic, nutrient-rich water from the basins is introduced in water-guiding horizons below the basins, which are untreated by the leakage water from the basins, by an injection well. An independent claim is included for a device for neutralizing sulfuric acid-containing opencast mine water such as edge tube water.
