Detecting bacteria that produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) comprises adding a sample to a culture medium containing an antibiotic selective for ESBL-producing bacteria and a cephalosporinase-inhibiting boronic acid, incubating the medium and detecting any colonies formed by ESBL-producing bacteria. An independent claim is also included for a culture medium (unspecified) for use in the above assay.
