The method involves providing a three-dimensional shape measurement sensor (18), and providing a metrological pattern i.e. cylinder, comprising conformations e.g. flat surfaces, having dimensions of calibrated values. The conformations are measured by the measurement sensor, and values obtained by the measurement of the conformations are compared with the calibrated values. Precision of the measurement sensor corresponding to difference between the measurement values and the calibrated values is determined.
