FIELD: physics.;SUBSTANCE: boundaries of the monitored territory are established and an automated monitoring system with software is installed on the monitored territory. A three-dimensional coordinate map of the monitored territory is visually created in a central computer before measurement. Data on the monitored territory are entered into the map in order to construct an optimum network of monitoring posts. Unit BP1 of computer programs is launched in order to construct an optimum network of monitoring posts. Direct problems are solved for each known pollution source from the range of influence of that source. All theoretically possible combinations of triads of monitoring posts which enable to solve the inverse problem of searching for each possible pollution source are determined. Such triads of posts are ranked according to their number of repetitions for all pollution sources and all considered meteorological situations. A decision is made on the optimum arrangement of monitoring posts in places presented by the BP1 unit. If theoretical data differ from measured values by a value which does not exceed a preset value, the optimum network of monitoring posts is arranged on the area. A program unit BP2 for solving the inverse problem of determining coordinates and power of hidden pollution sources is launched. Meteorological parametres and concentration of pollutants are measured in continuous mode. The measurement data are entered into the said BP2 where characteristics of the hidden source are determined.;EFFECT: optimisation of a network of monitoring posts and determination of characteristics of hidden pollution sources.;3 cl, 2 dwg, 1 tbl
