The method involves synchronously re-pivoting a rotary dumper (1) and an upwardly open railway carriage (2) until contents of the carriage in a bunker (6) are removed, where the bunker is arranged below the dumper. The carriage is detached before a short final stage of a pivoting process, during re-pivoting of the dumper. A platform (4) is moved to a support (14a) in a horizontal output position, by rolling a supporting roller (13) on a tilting curve (12) until a self-centering element (14) is positioned. An independent claim is also included for a rotary dumper for evacuating an upwardly open railway carriage.
