The method involves radiating a sending signal in an infrared range on a rock, and detecting a measuring signal reflected by the rock. Values of the measuring signal are quantitatively determined within a wave number range between a lower limit value (g1) and an upper limit value (g2). A mineral portion of the clay mineral is determined from the values of the measuring signal. Harmonic of stretching oscillation is evaluated within the wave number range between the lower and upper limit values. An independent claim is also included for a portable device for determining mineral portion of pourable clay mineral in a rock, comprising a processor.
