The source has a hollow body target (15) arranged in an optical path of an electron beam (5). The hollow body target is designed as a hollow body with rectangular or quadratic or circular or elliptical or star shaped cross-section, and/or a hollow body with L-shaped or U-shaped or V-shaped cross-section. The target is made from a solid, liquid, or gaseous conversion material, and/or is formed as a surface area of a concave recess in a heat conducting material. A larger stretched surface is resulted from the conversion material with uniform optical focal spot size. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a focal spot of an X-ray radiation of an X-ray source.
