The method involves estimating projection coefficients in an orthonormal base of spherical functions, where the projection coefficients are representative of reduction of light intensity in a point (34) of a heterogeneous participating media (10), and the estimation of the projection coefficients is realized for the point of the heterogeneous participating media. Light quantity diffused by the heterogeneous participating media is estimated from the estimated projection coefficients along a light diffusion direction (120).
