In the present invention, polymer nanocomposite comprising nanocrystalline copper compounds embedded in the polymer matrix are prepared in an in-situ manner by heating the solid admixture comprising a copper metal precursor and a polymer matrix at the crystalline melting temperature of corresponding polymer matrix; the nanocrystalline copper compounds are monodispersed in the polymer matrix and characterized by having spherical, cubical and plate shaped morphologies with particle size varying between 10 to 400 nm. The polymer nanocomposite is also characterized for its humidity sensing property.
