Discloses a method for determining whether a bovine (Bos taurus) is affected by, or carrier of, the genetic defect that causes brachyspina by analysing its genomic DNA or RNA, the method comprising the steps of: a) obtaining a sample of biological material containing 5 said genomic DNA from the bovine b) extracting the nucleic acid from said sample c) genotyping the nucleic acid for SNPs located in the interval between nucleotide positions 20156961 and 22499122 on bovine chromosome 21 d) ascertaining whether said animal carries the brachyspina-risk haplotype Further disclosed are uses of the method perform marker assisted selection or genomic selection for increased fertility in said bovine species.
