The method involves detecting the distance between a slope end cap (13) and a brake (18) attached to the face conveyor (17) to start a mining interval at selected positions in the long wall process. The representing difference between the zero value and the distance value that is detected by the measurement device is determined as a convergence value. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing the method.
