The method involves including the operation modes of the thermoelectric generators (30) in the temperature management of the emission control system (40). The attainable heating performance and the cooling performance of the thermoelectric generator and the cooling performance of its additional components are taken into account for cooling of the thermoelectric generator or for controlling the emission control system. An independent claim is also included for a device for temperature management of an emission control system in an exhaust duct of an internal combustion engine.
