The present invention relates to methods of detecting bioactive compounds of heavy metals including exposing the compounds to fish chromatophores and measuring or sensing associated changes in one or more of the chromatophores. The method for detection of heavy metals is based on time dependent adaptation of Channa punctatus chromatophore against the metal"s toxicity. The pattern of fish chromatophores therefore, can be a very good bioindicator of the state of pollution in water bodies.
