The method (100) involves measuring (102) the phase current at a stator winding of a synchronous machine and computing (104) residual current ripple at the direct current input of a motor control device based on the measured phase current. The time-dependant current reference value on the stator winding is determined (106) based on the computed residual current ripple so that the backward induced residual current ripple is reduced. An independent claim is included for a motor control device for synchronous machine.
