The method involves illuminating recycled foundry sand with given light. The physical properties of re-imaging the foundry sand reflected light are determined such that the intensities of the red, green and blue lights are detected. The color locus defined by color coordinates in CIE norm color system is computed from the intensities. The spacing between the color locus and given reference value is determined. The recycled foundry sand is assigned to two given classes in dependence of the spacing between the color locus and reference value. An independent claim is included for method for reprocessing foundry sand.
