Disclosed are methods for synthesizing ex situ structures of graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, other graphene derivatives, and nanoparticles useful as polishing agents. In addition, disclosed methods and compositions for polishing, increasing hardness, protection, increasing durability and lubrication of moving and stationary parts in devices and systems, including engines, turbochargers, turbines, tracks, raceways, wheels, bearings , gears, armor, heat shields, and other physical and mechanical systems that use treated interacting solid surfaces with the help of nanopolishing agents formed in situ of lubricating compounds, and in some cases teas ex situi their various applications.
