The method involves combining the exhaust gas of the burner (22) with the exhaust gas of the spark-ignition internal combustion engine (10) and guiding the obtained mixed exhaust gas to an exhaust catalyst (18,20) having a three-way catalyst function. The actual oxygen content (lambda-Ist) of the mixed exhaust gas or a correlating parameter is measured, and the fuel quantity (m-k) supplied to the burner is affected such that the actual fuel content approaches the target oxygen content of the mixed exhaust gas. An independent claim is included for an exhaust system for a spark-ignition internal combustion engine.
