The system (10) has a high pressure-fuel pump (18) comprising a high pressure outlet (24) and a fuel inlet (20) connected with an outlet of a low pressure fuel pump (14). A fuel return line (22) is connected with a fuel tank (12) over a fuel return-flow pipe (46). A temperature sensor (60) is arranged such that the sensor detects fuel temperature in the fuel return-flow pipe. A controller (56) controls delivery rate of the low pressure fuel pump based on the fuel temperature detected by the temperature sensor. A pressure sensor (54) is connected with a high pressure fuel storage (38). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine.
