The method involves determining an actual torque (M) on a torsion bar (9) of a steering system (1), such that a steering position of the steering system is determined. The operating condition, in which a driver does not operate a steering wheel (10), is detected, when the actual torque at the torsion bar of the steering system has a characteristic curve on the steering position of the steering system.
