The present invention relates to a moving vehicle detection system and method using an object tracking algorithm based on edge information. The method according to the present invention includes the steps of: removing a shadow or noise included in an input image using noise filtering; extracting edge information included in the input image; extracting edge information connected in a vehicle form; generating a background image of a grayscale image; finally generating a difference image of a foreground monochrome image from which the shadow or noise is removed; extracting edge information of a vehicle form; determining whether the edge of an object candidate region is identical to the shape information of the vehicle; determining that a new vehicle enters a detection area; and updating the corresponding vehicle object candidate region to a road background at high speed. The present invention can detect the new vehicle by updating the background image.
