The target technology provides for initiating a communication interface in a wireless communication system. In one embodiment, a neighboring node is found at the access point. The target technology receives, via a network message in response to finding a neighboring node, an indication of the address associated with the neighboring node for the configuration of the communication interface. It is then determined whether to initiate either a direct communication interface or an indirect communication interface for communication with the neighboring node based on the address indication in the received network message.
