PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a maximum amplitude of a principal shock to be easily estimated by eliminating necessity of earthquake observation to obtain a coefficient in a linear formula, for calculating the maximum amplitude of the principal shock from a maximum amplitude of a preliminary tremor, in a manner that determines the coefficient in the linear formula using a parameter having a strong correlation therewith.SOLUTION: A method for estimating a maximum amplitude of an earthquake principal shock: derives a maximum amplitude of a preliminary tremor from observation data thereon observed at one observation point; and estimates the maximum amplitude of the principal shock with a linear formula of the derived maximum amplitude of the preliminary tremor. A coefficient of the maximum amplitude of the preliminary tremor in the linear formula can be calculated by a logarithmic function of predominant vibrational frequency of the ground around the observation point.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
