A mining system and method for a single steeply-inclined thick coal seam coal, wherein a transport chute (2) is constructed along a coal seam floor (1), and a production system is formed with mountains on both sides of a mining area. In the transport chute (2), a top coal hydraulic support (3) is arranged along the thickness of the coal seam, and a step of a coal circulation cycle is 1.0 m. Inside a goaf (8) behind the top coal hydraulic support (3), a passage for air return is maintained on the top side. A fresh air flow required by a working face is transported from a transport stone gate of the mining area by way of a track uphill (10) into a transport chute (2), and then the working face of the mined coal is cleaned and then returned to an air return uphill (9) by an air return passage (4). Unique air return passage ventilation is employed, which has the characteristics of a simple roadway layout system, strong adaptability, large working face yield and a high safety level.
