Tracking hit and run perpetrators using V2X communication

A host vehicle comprises hardware to monitor for collisions, crashes or other accidents (402) with target vehicles, and to determine whether the collision is a hit-and-run (406), and collect identification information (408) about the target vehicle. Should the collision be determined to be a hit and run, then a message is broadcast including the identifying information and a cascade duration (410). The determination as to whether the target vehicle has absconded may be achieved by the host vehicle setting a timer and threshold distance and determining whether the target vehicle distance exceeds the threshold distance within a threshold time. The location and/ or identification of the target vehicle may be determined by exchange of messages, or using sensors located on the host vehicle. The identifying information may comprise license plate number and/or make, model and colour of the target vehicle. The cascade duration may cause a bystander vehicle or roadside infrastructure to rebroadcast the message. A further vehicle may determine, based upon reception of the message, whether the target vehicle is in its vicinity. The further vehicle may then broadcast a message with updated target vehicle tracking information and cascade duration.
