In order to provide a rigid sail or aerofoil sail which has a lower overallweight, is cost-effectiveto manufacture and does not affect the passing under bridges, power linesor similar structures arranged over busy waters, in the case of a rigid sail(100) forvessels (10), in particular, for large ships, such as bulk carriers, tankers,car transportersor bulkers, comprising a mast (14) and a first aerofoil wing body (12) mountedonthe mast (14) with a base (15) and a head (17), wherein the mast (14) isinsertedthrough the base (15) into the first aerofoil wing body (12) and is arrangedwithin thefirst aerofoil wing body (12), it is proposed that the mast (14), startingfrom the base(15), does not extend beyond a maximum height (21) of the first aerofoil wingbody(12), in particular, less than 75% of the maximum height (21).
