Provided are a method for monitoring the location (12) of insulation damage of a subway/coal-mine return track and transition resistance thereof, comprising the following steps: connecting a return track (1) to a negative electrode of a power substation (2), and selecting the location of the connection point as a reference position (11) and installing an electric-potential monitoring device (3) at the reference position (11); installing a travel distance monitoring device (5) and a traction current monitoring device (6) on a motorized vehicle (4); the motorized vehicle (4) traveling along the return track (1) to the power substation (2), and the electric-potential monitoring device (3), the travel distance monitoring device (5), and the traction current monitoring device (6) sending their respective recorded data to a control unit (7); the control unit (7) identifying from the received electric potential data the jump in electric potential and the corresponding jump time, and determining the operating distance of the motorized vehicle (4) and the total operating length of the motorized vehicle (4) at the time of the jump so as to determine the location of the ground insulation damage (12), and correspondingly obtain the transition resistance value of the ground insulation damage location (12). In the monitoring method, the location of the insulation damage of the return track (1) is directly and conveniently monitored online and in real time; the monitoring system has a simple structure and an appropriate cost, and is especially suitable for application in the field of DC traction motorized vehicles (4) such as those used in a coal mine or a subway.
