Disclosed are a method for detecting a topic in a data stream of a social network service and a device thereof. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the method for detecting a topic in a data stream of a social network service comprises the steps of: calculating a utility for each word included in a data stream; determining a minimum utility threshold by using the utility for each word; generating candidate topic patterns through high utility pattern mining based on the minimum utility threshold; and extracting a final topic pattern from the candidate topic patterns.
