Power source equipment (PSE) controllers that exhibit low standby levels for Power over Ethernet (PoE) include: a microcontroller; Detection and classification circuitry coupled to the microcontroller, for detecting whether a powered device (PD) is connected and for determining the power required to operate the connected PD; And a power control and supervisory circuit coupled to the microcontroller, for powering the connected PD and monitoring the power consumption of the PD. The detection and classification circuitry and the power control and monitoring circuitry can be turned off individually by the microcontroller to minimize standby power, the microcontroller is placed in deep sleep if the PD is not detected and the PD is detected.
