In recent years dementia has beconie more common as increasingudnumbers of people are reaching advanced old age. The relative absenceudof services specifically designed to cope with the condition posesudproblems for sufferers, carers and service providers in Ireland.udOn 4th June 1993, the National Council for the Elderly hosted a Seminarudon Dementia Services: Information and Development, at the RoyaludMarine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire. It was attended by over 130 policy makersudand providers of services for the elderly with an interest in the problemsudand challenges presented by dementia.udThe purpose of the Seminar was to consider a proposal to establish audDementia Services Information and Development Centre in Ireland whichudwould encourage the development of high quality services for peopleudwith dementia and their carers. The response to this proposal wasudoverwhelmingly positive and it was agreed that the National Council forudthe Elderly should establish a Committee to progress the matter further.
