In a non-uniformly distributed network, the dataconcentratingcentre equipped with sparse nodes rapidly depletesits battery energy due to the hotspot problem. To solvethis problem, a Virtual Uneven Grid-based Routing protocol(VUGR) is proposed in this paper, which aims to prolong thestable network operating time by dynamically partitioninggrid cells, so as to handle energy resources into smaller cellsto form such uneven grid cells. A maintenance mechanism ina smart home environment for the higher-layer virtual structureis also adopted in the VUGR to ensure the stable operationof the entire network. In addition, latest location informationis updated regularly to all regions within the network.Simulation results demonstrate that the VUGR protocol performsbetter compared to existing solutions.
