Soils of the Sylvania Wilderness-Recreation Area, Western Upper Peninsula, Michigan

This document characterizes 22 soil profiles in the Sylvania Wilderness-Recreation Area on the Ottawa National Forest, including soil descriptions and laboratory data. A soil map at a scale of 1:24,000 is provided. The genesis of the soils is discussed. The Sylvania Wilderness and Recreation Area (SWRA) is comprised of 7,420 ha and managed by the Ottawa National Forest. The area is unique in that it features old-growth forest, several threatened or endangered plants and animals, and 35 spring-fed lakes along the Lake Superior- Mississippi River drainage divide.
